KUHeS was established in 1991 as the College of Medicine (COM), a constituent college of the University of Malawi with three main roles of training, research and service. The University offers training to not only medical doctors but also other health professionals such as pharmacists, physiotherapists, laboratory technologists, nurses. COM merged with the Kamuzu College of Nursing to become KUHeS during the unbundling of the University of Malawi.
The University of Malawi is the largest and oldest university in the country. The university was formerly known as Chancellor College under the University of Malawi, the Zomba based institution retained the name of University of Malawi during the unbundling of the five constituent colleges of the university.
The University was established under legal authority granted by a provision in the University of Malawi Act of 1965; Formerly known as the Polytechnic, the institution is now a stand alone university following the unbundling of the University of Malawi.
MUST was established by an Act of Parliament Number 31 of 2012 with the aim of promoting the development, adaptation, transfer and application of science, technology and innovation for macro- and micro-economic development of Malawi.
Mzuzu University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1997 as Malawi’s second national (public) university in Malawi.
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources is the third public University in Malawi. The University has two main colleges, Bunda College of Agriculture and the Natural Resources College. In order to widen access to higher education in the country, the University established a campus in the city of Lilongwe known as City Campus, which is under Bunda College of Agriculture as well as the Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL), with centres in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
Since its inception in 1995, MLW has maintained partnership with College of Medicine at the University of Malawi, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the University of Liverpool and our major funder the Wellcome Trust. MLW is based in Blantyre with field research sites around urban Blantyre, Thyolo and Chikhwawa.
The Catholic University of Malawi is a fast-growing and dynamic institution of higher learning accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to offer Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates in various fields of learning. It was established by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) on October 16, 2004 and officially opened its doors in 2006.
Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA), is Malawi’s premier accountancy and business management training institution, since its inception in 1980 the college has always believed in the need to approach higher education from the inside-out; that entails putting the student’s experience first and at the center of everything.
University of Blantyre Synod (UBS) is a private higher education institution located in Blantyre , Southern Region. Officially recognized by the Ministry of Education, UBS is a coeducational Malawian higher education institution formally affiliated with the Christian-Presbyterian religion.
The Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care opened in July 2017. It is a 50-bed paediatric surgical hospital with 3 theatres, a 6-bed ICU and two 4-bed HDU’s. The unit is the national referral center for paediatric surgery and includes the country’s only PICU. The MJC is part of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), the academic teaching hospital of KUHeS, the only medical school in Malawi
Salima Technical College is one of the four wholly Government owned public technical college along with Lilongwe, Soche and Nasawa. The College is conveniently situated along the shores of the famous Lake Malawi at Senga Bay in Salima District about 140 Km east of the Capital City Lilongwe
Nalikule College of Education is an insititution of higher education under Ministry of Education. It offers bachelor degrees in education to Malawian citizens. The Institution was constructed by the Government of Malawi with technical support from the Government of Japan under Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Mzuzu Technical College was established in 1958. Prior to this establishment, the school was originally in Nkhata-Bay district at Banga where it was established in 1955 by the name Banga Trade School (the present premises of Nkhata-Bay Secondary School). The college has experienced several ownership changes. Started by the White Fathers society from 1955 to 1966, then it was handed over to the Marianist Brothers who owned it up to 1974 and then handed it over to Mzuzu Diocese who are the current landlords, though the staff members are employed by the Ministry of Education
UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking is the alliance of Eastern and South African National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) supporting a vibrant connected research and education community. The Alliance connects over 12 NRENs in the region and is headquartered in Lilongwe, Malawi
MCHS was formed by a merger of the Lilongwe School of Health Sciences (LSHS) in Lilongwe, the Medical Assistants Training School (MATS) in Blantyre and Zomba School of Nursing (ZSN) in Zomba. The merger of the three campuses was established through a government order, dated 21 June 1996.
The National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of Malawi (NHBG) is a parastatal botanical institution. It is the principal authority on botanical and related matters in Malawi. The NHBG administrative headquarters is located about 3 km N.W. of Zomba town centre overlooking the Government Press, Parliament, and Malawi National Examinations Board.
Nasawa Technical College is one of the four wholly Government owned public technical college along with Lilongwe, Soche and Salima. The College is situated in Zomba southeast of Namadzi Post Office.
St Luke’s College of Health Sciences was established in 1972. It is an Anglican-owned institution under the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire. On its inception, the College’s mandate was to train nurses for the St. Luke’s hospital and its five health centers. At first, the College used to train only enrolled nurses for two years who then completed an additional year for midwifery at Mulanje Mission College of Nursing and Midwifery. Currently, the enrolment number of students has increased progressively to over 600 as of 2016.
The University of Livingstonia is a private owned institution by the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia. It started in 2003 in fulfilment of Rev. Dr Robert Laws’ dream to establish an institution of higher learning. It is started at the place where Dr Laws founded the Overtoun Institute, which was known at the time as the ‘Greatest Achievement’ in Central Africa, specifically in relation to the offering of quality education and other social services.
Lilongwe Technical College was established in 1963 with the overall goal of training and supplying craftsmen and women to meet the never-ending industrial demands. Three courses were offered in the early days, which included carpentry and joinery, Bricklaying and plumbing. However, the college experienced expansion between 1968 and 1983 during which Motor Vehicle Mechanics, General Fitting, Electrical Installation, Welding and Fabrication, Vehicle Body Repair and Refinishing, Machine Woodwork, Secretarial Studies and Accounting were introduced.
Soche Technical College is the oldest public technical college which opened its doors in 1956 as a result of a Bill passed in the legislative council for Government to start offering Technical Education in 1950. Since its inception, the college has continuously developed and evolved from a mere Artisan Training centre in 1956 until it was finally elevated to the status of a technical college in 1985. The College currently boasts of four departments namely Commercial, Construction, Automobile Engineering and Mechanical Engineering which offer the following courses: Accountancy, Information Technology, Secretarial and Management studies, Painting and Decorating, Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Wood machining, Automobile Mechanics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, General Fitting, Welding and Fabrication, Refrigeration, Textile and Pattern Design and Upholstery.

St. John’s Institute for Health was called the School of Nursing from 1963 up to 2005. The name changed to St. John´s College of Nursing and Midwifery from 2005 to 2018, following an improvement of the curriculum. Currently, it is called St. John’s Institute for Health (SJIH) because of the introduction of other programs.
Domasi College of Education is the largest Teachers’ Training College in Malawi which trains teachers at both Diploma and Degree levels using two modes of training; face to face and distance. It offers diploma and degrees in secondary education and degrees in Primary education The College aims at becoming the centre of Excellency in teacher education in Malawi and strives to train and graduate high calibre educators who can work effectively in any education sector in Malawi and beyond the borders of Malawi. Domasi College of Education is located in Zomba in the Southern Region of Malawi, some 20 km away from Zomba City along the M8 road to Lilongwe.
Zomba Theological College (ZTC) is one of the leading institutions of theological education in Malawi. The College offers two National Council of Higher Education programs: Diploma in Theology and Bachelor of Divinity. Rooted in the Church of Central Africa (Presbyterian) ZTC actively work towards unifying Christians of all types and gives students many exciting opportunities in Malawi and Scotland through partnership with the University of Aberdeen and their Master’s programs.
Established in 2011, Nkhoma University is a private higher education institution located in the large city of Lilongwe (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Central Region. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the National Council for Higher Education, Malawi, Nkhoma University (NU) is a coeducational higher education institution formally affiliated with the Christian-Presbyterian religion. Nkhoma University (NU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study.
Daeyang University a Christian University founded by the Miracle for Africa Foundation.It is situated in Lilongwe behind Malawi School of governance, off the M1 road passing between Kamuzu International Airport and Kanengo industrial area.
The Malawi Correspondence College was established as a department of the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1965. In 1973, this college merged with the Schools Broadcasting Unit to form the Malawi Correspondence College and Broadcasting Unit. In 1987, the College changed its name to the Malawi College of Distance Education (MCDE). The College is part of the Ministry of Education. Currently the MCDE operates the Education Broadcasting Station (EBS), an online radio station, which MAREN connects at no cost as part of MAREN´s Corporate Social responsibility.
Situated in Fatima-Nsanje is one of Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) colleges. The College offers nursing and midwifery, nutrition and other Public Health programmes.
The National College of Information Technology(NACIT) is a training section under the Department of E-Government in the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology. NACIT consists of two centers in Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Malamulo Adventist Hospital is a Christian mission hospital in the rural location of Makwasa, in Southern Thyolo District of Malawi. The Malamulo Mission was founded in 1902. The hospital started as a clinic in 1915, then as a Leprosarium in 1925, and developed into a referral hospital by 1953.
