The Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) held a constitutional review meeting at the Bingu International Conference Center in Lilongwe on Friday, signalling its commitment to transparency and robust governance in driving Malawi’s academic and research agenda.

The meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including MAREN’s member institutions, government representatives, academic leaders, and experts in the field. The primary objective of this gathering was to engage in an open dialogue to enhance the network’s constitution, ensuring that it remains aligned with the evolving needs of Malawi’s research and education landscape.

The constitutional review process was characterised by spirited discussions, collaborative brainstorming, and a shared commitment to advancing the network’s mission. Key topics under consideration included governance structures, membership criteria and decision-making processes.

Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education, Dr Levis Eneya, speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of MAREN’s Governing Board, Mrs Chikondano Mussa, hailed MAREN for conducting the meeting, saying it demonstrates the growth MAREN has registered since its operationalisation in 2018.

“Not so long ago, MAREN was just a small organisation. As the government, we are happy to see MAREN growing at the rate it is and to see the impact the organisation is having on the research and education community in the country. This constitutional review is a testament to MAREN’s dedication to excellence, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of our stakeholders.”

During the meeting, the Legal consultant Brian Hara presented an overview of the draft MAREN constitution before facilitating a lively feedback session where participants examined specific sections and deliberated on proposed amendments.

MAREN CEO Solomon Dindi expressed gratitude to the participants for participating in the meeting, adding that being an organisation that aims to serve the needs of its members, it was important for the members to have a voice on how they want MAREN to operate.

“This constitutional review meeting represents a significant milestone in MAREN’s ongoing journey to foster collaboration, facilitate knowledge sharing, and provide cutting-edge digital services to its member institutions. By engaging our stakeholders in this transparent and participatory process, MAREN is effectively reinforcing its dedication to serving the academic and research community in Malawi,” said Dindi.
