The Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant by the Internet Society Foundation’s 2024 Resiliency Grant Program. This grant, valued at USD $499,809, will enable MAREN to enhance internet infrastructure in Malawi, particularly in regions vulnerable to natural disasters. By leveraging innovative solutions, this initiative aims to ensure communities remain connected during emergencies, strengthening the nation’s digital resilience.
MAREN’s project focuses on deploying solar-powered LTE-supported nodes to establish a resilient backup network for existing internet infrastructure. These sustainable, energy-efficient nodes are specifically designed to provide reliable connectivity, even during prolonged power outages caused by disasters. In addition, the project emphasizes building local capacity by training Information Technology experts to maintain and manage the new infrastructure, ensuring long-term sustainability and operational effectiveness.
Malawi has faced significant challenges from climate-related disasters, such as floods and cyclones, which often disrupt essential internet services. Connectivity during such times is critical for coordinating disaster response, accessing vital resources, and maintaining communication with affected communities. MAREN’s project will directly address these challenges by establishing robust disaster-resistant infrastructure that will protect and restore connectivity when it is needed most.
This initiative also aligns with the Internet Society Foundation’s mission to support a globally connected, secure, and trustworthy internet. Since its launch in 2021, the Resiliency Grant Program has played a pivotal role in strengthening internet infrastructure worldwide. The 2024 program awarded funding to nine innovative projects across various regions, all dedicated to strengthening network resiliency in the face of natural disasters.
This project is an important step forward for Malawi’s digital infrastructure and a shining example of how strategic partnerships can drive meaningful change. For more updates on MAREN’s initiatives and the Resiliency Grant Program, visit Internet Society Foundation.
