The Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) held a team-building retreat from February 10-11, 2025. The aim of this exercise was, among other things, to train staff members in workplace etiquette, change management and situational leadership. The team-building event was a dynamic blend of learning, fun, and collaboration, with a strong focus on embracing change and professionalism in the workplace. The activities encouraged employees to think beyond their usual roles, work together effectively, and celebrate the power of teamwork.

One of the highlights of the day was the engaging session on Marketing for Non-Marketers. Employees from various departments gained insights into marketing strategies and customer engagement, helping them understand how their roles contributed to MAREN’s overall success. Through interactive discussions and case studies, participants learned the importance of brand awareness and its impact on their everyday interactions with the company’s public image. A particularly memorable activity was Planes and Giraffes, a fun and metaphorical exercise that underscored the importance of adaptability in a changing work environment. Just like airplanes must adjust to turbulence and giraffes must stretch to reach new heights, employees were encouraged to embrace change, think creatively, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.

Team-building games brought out the competitive spirit in everyone while reinforcing the value of teamwork. Employees participated in a variety of challenges that required problem-solving, communication, and trust. These games served as a reminder that collaboration is leads to better results. A key component of the day was a refresher on office etiquette and professionalism. From effective communication and workplace respect to maintaining a positive and inclusive office culture, employees were reminded that professionalism went beyond attire—it was about fostering an environment where everyone felt valued and respected.

The team-building day also included a special awards segment, where employees were recognized for their dedication, creativity, and contributions to the company. These awards reinforced the culture of appreciation at MAREN and motivated everyone to continue striving for excellence in their respective roles. A unique and much-appreciated highlight was when members of the management team personally served employees during the lunch break. This act of service symbolized the company’s commitment to a supportive and inclusive work environment, showing that leadership was about humility and teamwork.

MAREN took pride in its diverse workforce, and the team-building exercises reflected this value. Employees shared their perspectives and experiences, learning from one another and strengthening the sense of unity within the organization. The activities demonstrated that diversity was not just about representation but about leveraging different strengths to achieve common goals.

The biggest takeaway from the day was the realization that teamwork’s victory was sweeter than individual success. The collective efforts of employees across different departments proved that when individuals united toward a common objective, the results were more fulfilling and impactful.
