1. SYSTEMS ENGINEER
The Systems Engineer (SE) shall report to the Systems Manager and will ensure highest level of systems efficiency and support available to MAREN and client institutions.
Key Accountabilities:
- Managing and monitoring all installed applications
- Installing, configuring, testing and maintaining applications
- Proactively ensuring the highest levels of service availability of deployed applications.
- Monitoring and testing application performance for potential bottlenecks, identifying possible solutions, and implementing those fixes
- Maintaining security, backup, and redundancy strategies
- Writing and maintaining custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
- Participating in the design of information and operational support systems
- Being the first line of client help desk support and pro-actively engaging clients on system issue
- Liaising with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
- Developing and supporting software systems for end users
Qualifications and Experience
A suitable candidate shall have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology from a recognized institution or related fields.
- Solid experience in developing and supporting applications in the past 3 years
- Solid experience in the administration and performance tuning of application stacks (e.g. Tomcat, JBoss, Apache, Ruby, NGINX)
- Experience with DevOps and practical use of Ansible playbooks
- Experience with monitoring systems
- Experience with automation software (e.g., Puppet, cfengine, Chef)
- Solid scripting skills (e.g., shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python)
- Solid knowledge of modern programing languages such as Java, PHP and their trending development environments/frameworks
- Any other relevant duties assigned by MAREN management from time to time.
Term of office
The SE shall be engaged on a 3-year contract which will be considered for renewal based on performance.
2. CYBERSECURITY ENGINEER
The Cybersecurity Engineer (CSE) shall report to the Network and Infrastructure Manager and Systems Manager on Network & infrastructure issues and Systems issues respectively. S/he shall assume the core responsibility to create, implement and monitor defensive security systems and features within the education network.
Key Accountabilities:
- Planning, implementing, managing, monitoring and upgrading security measures for the protection of the organization’s data, systems and networks
- Troubleshooting security problems
- Responding to all system and/or network security breaches
- Ensuring that the organization’s data and infrastructure are protected by enabling the appropriate security controls
- Participating in the change management process
- Testing and identifying network and system vulnerabilities
- Developing policies and procedures for securing systems, data and networks
- Investigating security incidents
- Ensuring that security policies are adhered to at all times
- Being the first line of client help desk support and pro-actively engaging clients on security issues.
- Organizing cybersecurity training workshops for client institutions.
- Offering direct engineering assistance on cybersecurity to client institutions.
- Any other relevant duties assigned by MAREN management from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
A suitable candidate shall have:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity or related fields from a recognized institution.
- Knowledge of IP networks and popular operating systems.
- Proven working experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting UNIX /Linux based environments.
- Hands on experience with modern security tools such as SIEM, SOAR, XDR, SAST/DAST etc
- Solid scripting skills (e.g., shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python)
- Solid knowledge of modern programing languages such as Java, PHP and their trending development environments/frameworks
- Solid knowledge of analysis of data sets preferably system logs and unstructured data.
- Solid knowledge of intrusion detection and prevention systems.
- Knowledge of data recovery tools and procedures.
Term of Office
The CSE shall be on a 3-year contract renewable based on performance.
3. INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER
The Network and Infrastructure Engineer (NIFE) shall report to the Network and Infrastructure Manager on Network and shall assume the core responsibility of designing, building, deploying, evaluating, and maintaining MAREN’s IT infrastructure.
Key Accountabilities:
- Installing, configuring and deploying servers and storage systems.
- Proactively monitoring performance and ensuring the highest levels of server infrastructure availability and reliability.
- Monitoring server system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning.
- Producing documentation for the installation of systems including IP addresses, RAM, Storage, CPU and others.
- Providing support to other teams within MAREN with server resources when required.
- Supporting MAREN clients with appropriate configurations tailor-made for specific institutional resources.
- Implementing disaster recovery strategies for all MAREN data centres.
- Periodically testing automated backups to ensure recovery of systems in a failure.
- Supporting and contributing to IT-related tasks or projects through the implementation of appropriate technologies and solutions.
- Being the first line of client help desk support and pro-actively engaging clients on hardware issues.
- Producing periodic reports to ascertain the smooth operation of MAREN data centres.
- Any other relevant duties assigned by MAREN management from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
A suitable candidate shall have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Advanced knowledge of Unix/Linux command line and Unix Operating system troubleshooting.
- Ability to perform automation using Ansible, Chef or Puppet.
- Proven experience working with open source cloud, hypervisors and storage solutions (e.g. VMware, Proxmox, oVirt, KVM, iSCSI, FreeNAS, CryptoNAS, Openstack, Virtual Box etc.) in the past 3 years. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to convey information clearly to clients and colleagues.
- The ability to configure RAID for optimum protection and performance.
- Client-centric mindset with a high degree of both pro-activity and responsiveness.
- Excellent diagnostic skills and ability to exercise good judgment in the resolution of problems.
Term of Office
The NIFE shall be on a 3-year contract renewable based on performance.
4. Client Engagement Officer (CLEO)
The CLEO shall report to the Partnerships and Development Manager and be responsible for building and maintaining strong client relationships.
Key Accountabilities:
- Implementation of sales and marketing strategies
- Promoting MAREN’s product and service portfolio
- Organizing and attending activities or events to raise brand awareness
- Liaising with stakeholders to promote success of activities
- Conduct market research to identify opportunities for promotion and growth; and establish the best way to reach target groups
- Gathering client’s technical requirements and aligning them with MAREN’s solutions
- Developing proposals and quotations in response to new business requests
- Conducting demos on MAREN’s products and services
- Assisting in planning, preparing and managing the publication and distribution of marketing and promotional materials for use in different channels.
- Assisting in developing and executing marketing and sales campaigns and evaluating their effectiveness
- Assisting with product & service development, and pricing strategies
- Introducing new products and services to the market
- Assisting in developing, presenting, and implementing policies and procedures to ensure client satisfaction
- Assisting in conducting external corporate image audits and client surveys
- Any other relevant duties assigned by MAREN management from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
A suitable candidate shall have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Business Communication or related fields from a recognized institution. Those with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Management Information Systems from recognized institutions with certifications in marketing or communication will be considered.
- Prior experience in sales, marketing, customer relations in a busy organization involved in hardware, software or other ICT services.
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office and any Customer Relationship Management Systems
- Solid knowledge of sales and marketing techniques and principles
- Experience in digital marketing
- Technical knowledge of computer hardware, software or ICT services
- Some understanding of key services offered by National Research and Education Networks
- Understanding of ICT service requirements of the Education and Research Sectors.

The CLEO shall be on a 3-year contract renewable based on performance.
5. COMMUNICATION OFFICER (COMO)
The COMO shall report to the Chief Executive Officer of MAREN and will overall be responsible for promoting MAREN’s products, services and activities to enhance MAREN’s visibility. The incumbent will be the liaison officer between MAREN and the public.
Key Accountabilities
- Developing and executing communication strategies, developing, writing and editing marketing and communications materials, including press releases, website content, and social media content
- Promoting communication and marketing materials through appropriate social channels
- Tracking analytics and creating reports detailing successes and failures of communication campaigns
- Ensuring that all communication and marketing materials align with brand standards
- Maintaining digital media archives including photos and videos
- Responding to media inquiries and perform media outreach to achieve brand placement in publications
- Developing escalation protocols for managing communication crises, should they arise
- Any other duties assigned by MAREN management from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
A suitable candidate shall:
- Be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields from a recognized institution.
- Prior experience in developing stories for a research and/or education entity
- Have facilitated development of articles in the local papers
- Have hands-on experience managing website content and social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
- Have ability to work under minimal supervision
- Have ability to work under pressure
- Have ability to work as part of a diverse and inclusive team
- Have high degree of integrity and professionalism
Term of office
The COMO shall be on a 3-year contract renewable based on performance.
