Reliable, affordable, and sustainable connectivity and digital services for Malawi’s research and education community depend not only on robust infrastructure but also on sound financial management. To strengthen this foundation, the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) has enhanced its financial capacity through a regional programme focused on financial management, compliance, and institutional sustainability.

Finance and Administration Manager Grace Dzoole and Accountant Catherine Chirwa represented MAREN at the Regional Training on Financial Management, Compliance, and Sustainability for National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 22–26 June 2026. The training was delivered under the AfricaConnect4 regional capacity-building programme, which supports African NRENs in strengthening their financial and institutional sustainability.

The programme equipped participants with practical knowledge in financial reporting and planning, sustainable pricing models, donor-funded project management, financial analytics, and internal controls. These competencies will strengthen MAREN’s financial management systems, reinforce compliance, improve operational efficiency, and support evidence-based decision-making. They will also enhance the organisation’s ability to manage donor-funded projects and develop pricing models that balance affordability with long-term sustainability.

Finance and Administration Manager Grace Dzoole said the knowledge gained will enable MAREN to strengthen its financial systems while improving the delivery of services to its member institutions.

“The training equipped us with practical tools to strengthen financial management, improve compliance, and make more informed financial decisions. It also enhanced our capacity in sustainable pricing, grant management, and financial analytics, which will help us build a more resilient and sustainable institution while delivering greater value to our member institutions,” she said.

By strengthening its financial capacity, MAREN is better positioned to provide reliable and cost-effective digital services to Malawi’s research and education community. The improved expertise in donor compliance and grant management will also enhance the organisation’s ability to attract and successfully implement projects that expand digital infrastructure, strengthen institutional capacity, and support the long-term growth of the country’s research and education sector.
