Library operations at Domasi College of Education are set for a major efficiency boost following a three-day handover and user training on the Koha Integrated Library System—commonly known as Koha—conducted by the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN).
Koha, an open-source Integrated Library System used globally, enables libraries to manage cataloguing, circulation of books, acquisitions, and online public access through a single digital platform. The training followed a successful upgrade of the institution’s Koha system from version 19 to 25, positioning the library to better serve students and staff.
The programme brought together librarians and technical personnel for a mix of theoretical and practical sessions designed to deepen their understanding of Koha. Participants were taken through core Koha modules such as circulation, cataloguing, acquisitions, the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), and system administration—key components that drive modern, efficient library services.
Before the training, several users had limited exposure to Koha, often interacting with only a few features of the system. This created inefficiencies in workflows and limited the system’s full potential. The training aimed to bridge these gaps, ensuring that staff can now use Koha more holistically in their day-to-day operations.
By the end of the sessions, participants demonstrated improved competency in using Koha and were able to identify areas within their current setup that required optimization. The training also marked the official handover of the upgraded Koha system, empowering the institution to independently manage and sustain its digital library operations.
MAREN Systems Engineer, Jones Kumwenda, said the intervention is expected to deliver lasting impact.
“I am very optimistic that this training will significantly strengthen both individual capacity and institutional efficiency. With a more comprehensive understanding of Koha, participants are better equipped to utilize the system effectively and enhance overall library service delivery.”

The initiative highlights the growing role of systems like Koha in strengthening library services across Malawi’s education sector, where digital tools are becoming central to improving access to information and supporting research and learning.
