How can National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) build stronger support among the communities they serve? This was the central question explored by MAREN Systems Engineer Grace Gausi during her presentation on NREN identity and stakeholder engagement at the 2026 TNC Conference in Helsinki, Finland.
Held from 8–12 June, TNC is Europe’s largest research and education networking conference organised by GÉANT, bringing together more than 900 participants from across the global research and education community to explore emerging technologies, share experiences, and discuss the future of research and education networking.
In her presentation, Gausi highlighted the challenge of helping stakeholders understand what an NREN is and why it matters. She emphasized that while NRENs are often focused on delivering technical infrastructure and services, their long-term success also depends on how well they are understood and supported by university leaders, researchers, students, policymakers, and funders.
The presentation provided an opportunity for MAREN to contribute to international discussions on the future of research and education networking while sharing perspectives on the importance of stakeholder engagement in strengthening NRENs.

Beyond the presentation, participation in TNC 2026 exposed MAREN to emerging developments in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum networking, green networking, and digital infrastructure. It also enabled engagement with a global network of NREN professionals, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and future partnerships.
Reflecting on the experience, Gausi said the conference reinforced the value of collaboration within the global NREN community and provided practical lessons that can support MAREN’s continued growth and development.
“TNC was easily one of the best conferences I have attended. Beyond presenting on NREN identity and stakeholder engagement, the experience provided valuable insights into how mature NRENs operate, engage their communities, and develop innovative services. The knowledge gained and connections established will help strengthen MAREN’s capacity, enhance service delivery, and support new opportunities for collaboration that benefit Malawi’s research and education community.”
The experience is expected to support MAREN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its services, deepen engagement with member institutions, and identify innovative approaches to advancing research and education networking in Malawi.
Participation in international platforms such as TNC also ensures that MAREN remains connected to global developments shaping the future of research and education, while positioning the organisation to leverage international expertise and partnerships for the benefit of its members.
